I was recently asked by Jennifer Hubbell, aka my Instagram bestie/fellow Fancy Navajo, to assist in styling a photo shoot for her. I was ecstatic and said YES immediately. Styling has always been an area of interest to me. I get a lot of questions about my style, when I post my outfit of the day on my Instagram. So this would be the perfect opportunity to style someone other than myself. Jen is also an amazing photographer. We instantly became friends a year ago and we even did a Fancy Navajo shoot. Her photos are sooo gorgeous! Very light and airy. I just adore her photography style. Pairing our skills together, this was going to be an EPIC photo shoot!
We discussed our ideas over lunch and Jen settled on a Romantic Navajo themed shoot! One look would be in traditional Navajo attire, and the second would be a more modern look. OMG yesss!!! This was right up my alley! If I had to choose two words to describe my personal style, they would include “Romantic Navajo.” I adore pinks and pastels mixed with a little whimsy, glitter, and lots and lots of TURQUOISE jewelry!! Not to mention my husband makes gorgeous Navajo jewelry which we would showcase in the shoot!
To my surprise, my beautiful sister in law and her fiancé were chosen for the photo shoot it was like it was meant to be! So I worked closely with my sister in law to choose outfits that fit this romantic Navajo theme. I wanted to take this opportunity serious. So I spent a lot of time curating different looks on Polyvore. I also watched YouTube Videos on how to be a stylist. I even put together a stylist kit for the day of the shoot. (Let me know if you would like to know what I included in my kit.) I wanted to be overly prepared because there is more to styling a shoot than just picking out clothes and accessories. You have to make sure each shot is picture perfect!
Now the hardest part, finding all the items in my vision board!! I was on the hunt for a blush tone velvet dress! I got lucky one day when I walked into H&M!! Hidden behind a few other dresses there it was! A blush velvet dress. It was bell sleeved and the prettiest blush pink color. The perfect part was that it was under $40!!! I am firm believer in affordable fashion, so this was another plus! After that everything else seemed to fall into place. My sister in law picked out a gorgeous blue, one shoulder Pendelton dress from Navajo Spirit. The last item of difficulty was finding a velvet men’s shirt!! Luckily I remembered an Instagram friend who is an awesome sewer and she totally saved the day!!
The day of the photo shoot, I was fueled with coffee and was ready to conquer the day. I brought all my tools (steamer, stylist tool belt lol, and hubby’s jewelry). I spent a good portion of my time polishing jewelry and steaming clothes. I got a good arm workout! Hahaha!!
Finally it was show time!! Hair and makeup were done. Clothes and jewelry were ready to go! Did I mention the hubby made the squash blossom necklace for this shoot?!! Yesss!! The soft green turquoise paired well with the light colors.
I couldn’t believe how gorgeous my sister in law looked. To see everything come together was so magical. But my job didn’t stop there. We still had to take the pictures! I had to fix hair, adjust jewelry and clothes. All while staying out of the shot. Then the sun started to set and it was over!
I loved every moment of it! When Jen shared the pictures I was in awe with the beauty of everything. Jen did a perfect job at capturing the love in the photos. It made me want to round up the hubby for updated photos of us! Thanks again for letting me help out with this Jen!
If you are in need of engagement or wedding photos she is your gal! You can see more pictures of the photoshoot here.
